The Railway Recruitment Boards have released the detailed notification for RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 under CEN 06/2026, announcing 3,548 vacancies in Non-Technical Popular Categories across Indian Railways. Online registration is open from 8 October 2026 to 6 November 2026, and the first stage exam is tentatively planned for the fourth week of December 2026. For graduates from any stream who want a stable central government career with a well known employer, this is one of the most important recruitment drives of the year.

This guide covers everything you need before you apply and begin serious preparation: vacancy breakup, important dates, eligibility, age limit, application fee, how to apply, the revised selection process, exam pattern, syllabus, salary, and a practical study plan for the weeks ahead. It also explains what has changed compared to the previous graduate notification, because several of those changes directly affect how you should prepare.

A separate notification, CEN 07/2026, covers 1,688 undergraduate (12th pass) level vacancies, which means the combined NTPC recruitment this cycle stands at 5,236 posts. If you are a graduate, CEN 06/2026 is the one that matters for you.

What Has Changed in RRB NTPC Graduate 2026

Before you plan your preparation, understand how this notification differs from the previous graduate cycle. These changes are significant.

Fewer vacancies. The graduate vacancy count has come down from 5,810 in the previous notification to 3,548. Competition per seat is therefore likely to be higher, which makes a disciplined, high accuracy approach even more important.

Fewer posts. The notification now covers four posts instead of six. Station Master and Traffic Assistant are no longer part of this notification. From 2026, the Railway Recruitment Board is expected to handle Station Master recruitment through a separate notification.

No CBAT and no typing skill test. Because Station Master is not included, the Computer Based Aptitude Test is not part of this process. The Computer Based Typing Skill Test has also been dispensed with for Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Selection is based on CBT 1, CBT 2, document verification and medical examination.

Fewer pay levels. Earlier graduate posts spread across Pay Levels 4, 5 and 6. With Traffic Assistant removed, this notification covers only Level 5 and Level 6.

Aadhaar based verification. Candidates are advised to verify their details using Aadhaar during the application, and the name and date of birth should match the Class 10 certificate. Mismatches are one of the easiest ways to create problems later in the process, so check this before you start filling the form.

The practical takeaway is simple. The process is shorter, but the entire selection now rests on two computer based tests, so your written exam performance carries even more weight than before.

RRB NTPC Graduate Vacancy 2026

Post-Wise Vacancies

Post Pay Level Total Vacancies UR SC ST OBC-NCL EWS
Goods Train Manager 5 2,750 1,166 424 220 687 253
Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor 6 127 61 19 6 32 9

Senior Clerk cum Typist 5 371 169 63 39 80 20
Total   3,548 1,517 553 300 873 305

Goods Train Manager alone accounts for more than three quarters of all vacancies, so this post will shape the cutoff trends for the whole recruitment. If your goal is simply to secure a railway job, you should treat Goods Train Manager as your primary target while keeping the other posts in your preference list.

RRB-Wise Vacancies

Vacancies are distributed across 21 Railway Recruitment Boards. The larger allocations are as follows.

RRB Total Vacancies
Bilaspur 542
Ranchi 377
Bengaluru 346
Kolkata 332
Ajmer 304
Siliguri 291
Prayagraj 265
Bhopal 157
Mumbai 155
Bhubaneswar 146
Chennai 141
Guwahati 104
Muzaffarpur 78
Jammu-Srinagar 66
Chandigarh 59
Secunderabad 56

The remaining boards, including Ahmedabad, Gorakhpur, Malda, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram, have smaller allocations. For candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, RRB Secunderabad has 56 vacancies in this notification, so many aspirants will also consider RRB Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur or Chennai depending on their comfort with posting locations and language. Choose your RRB with care. You can apply to only one RRB for this notification, and the choice you make affects both your competition level and your posting zone.

Vacancy Trend

Year Graduate Level Vacancies
2019 24,678
2024 8,113
2025 5,810
2026 3,548

The downward trend is clear, and it is a reminder that railway recruitment cycles are shaped by administrative requirements. It also means you should not assume that you can casually wait for the next cycle. Prepare as if this is your best chance.

You can follow our Blogs section for date announcements as they are released.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Eligibility

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification for all four posts. Graduates from any stream, whether Arts, Commerce, Science or Engineering, are eligible, which is one reason NTPC attracts such large numbers of applicants.

For Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist, candidates must also possess the prescribed typing proficiency in English or Hindi on a computer. Although a separate typing skill test has been dispensed with for this cycle, you should check the notification carefully for how typing proficiency will be verified and what documents or declarations may be required.

Candidates in the final year of graduation may have additional conditions about when they must possess the degree, so read the educational qualification cutoff date in the notification before applying.

Age Limit

The age limit is 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027. This means a General or EWS candidate should have been born between 2 January 1994 and 1 January 2009. Age relaxation is available as per government rules.

Category Maximum Age
UR and EWS 33 years
OBC-NCL 36 years
SC and ST 38 years

Further relaxations apply to Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, ex-servicemen and other eligible categories as per the notification. Use our free Age Calculator to check your eligibility quickly, and read our detailed guide on RRB NTPC eligibility and age limit for nationality rules, medical standards and other conditions that can affect your application.

Medical and Other Requirements

Candidates are required to meet the medical standards prescribed for the post, which are verified at the final stage. Because the medical examination can disqualify an otherwise successful candidate, you should review the medical category prescribed for your preferred post in the notification, particularly vision standards.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Application Fee

Category Exam Fee
General and OBC Rs. 500
SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities and Economically Backward Class Rs. 250

Candidates who appear in CBT 1 are eligible for a partial refund of the fee after deduction of bank charges, as per the notification. Payment can be made through online banking, cards or UPI, and must be completed by 8 November 2026. An application without successful fee payment is treated as incomplete.

How to Apply for RRB NTPC Graduate 2026

  1. Visit the official RRB application portal at rrbapply.gov.in.
  2. Select CEN No. 06/2026, NTPC Graduate, from the list of ongoing recruitments.
  3. Complete the registration with a valid mobile number and email address.
  4. Log in and fill in your personal, educational and category details.
  5. Enter your Aadhaar details and confirm that the name and date of birth match your Class 10 certificate.
  6. Provide your communication details and select your RRB and post preferences carefully.
  7. Capture a live photograph through the application portal and upload your signature and any other documents in the prescribed format.
  8. Pay the application fee online.
  9. Review the entire form before final submission.
  10. Download the submitted application and payment receipt for your records.

Keep the following ready before you start: Aadhaar card, Class 10 certificate, graduation certificate and marksheets, category certificate where applicable, PwBD certificate where applicable, a scanned signature and a working mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Do not wait for the last few days. Portals slow down near deadlines, and a failed payment on the final day can cost you the entire attempt.

The modification window from 9 to 18 November 2026 lets you correct certain details after submission, but it is not a substitute for filling the form correctly the first time.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Selection Process

The selection process for CEN 06/2026 has four stages.

  1. Computer Based Test, Stage 1 (CBT 1): A screening test. Marks from this stage are used to shortlist candidates for CBT 2 in a ratio specified in the notification.
  2. Computer Based Test, Stage 2 (CBT 2): The main merit stage. Your CBT 2 performance largely determines your final rank.
  3. Document Verification: Shortlisted candidates are called for verification of educational, category, age and identity documents.
  4. Medical Examination: Candidates must meet the prescribed medical standard for their post.

There is no CBAT and no separate typing skill test in this cycle. For candidates who were worried about the typing requirement for the clerical posts, that is a welcome simplification. At the same time, it means every selection in this recruitment is decided by two online papers, so there is little room for recovery if you underperform in CBT 2.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Exam Pattern

Both CBTs test General Awareness, Mathematics and General Intelligence and Reasoning. Each wrong answer carries a negative mark of one third of the marks allotted to that question.

CBT 1

Section Questions Marks
General Awareness 40 40
Mathematics 30 30
General Intelligence and Reasoning 30 30
Total 100 100

Duration: 90 minutes.

CBT 2

Section Questions Marks
General Awareness 50 50
Mathematics 35 35
General Intelligence and Reasoning 35 35
Total 120 120

Duration: 90 minutes.

Three things stand out. First, the time per question is tight, roughly 54 seconds in CBT 1 and 45 seconds in CBT 2, so speed matters as much as concept knowledge. Second, General Awareness carries 40 to 42 percent of the total marks, and it is the section where focused daily effort produces the fastest score gains. Third, negative marking means you should skip questions you cannot narrow down, instead of guessing blindly. Our guide on RRB NTPC CBT 1 and CBT 2 preparation explains how to handle this balance in more detail.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Syllabus

For a topic-wise breakdown with weightage, see our RRB NTPC syllabus guide. Here is an overview of what to cover.

Mathematics

Number system, BODMAS and simplification, decimals and fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentages, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometry, elementary statistics, square root, age calculations, calendar and clock, pipes and cisterns. Questions are generally of graduation entry level but are designed to be solved quickly, so shortcuts and practice matter more than advanced theory.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

Analogies, alphabetical and number series, coding and decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, jumbling, venn diagrams, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, similarities and differences, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, statement and arguments, statement and assumptions. This section rewards regular timed practice, since the question types repeat across years.

General Awareness

Current affairs, general science up to Class 10 level, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, culture, sports, awards, books and authors, important days, government schemes, appointments, and railway related awareness such as major projects, trains and recent developments. Many candidates underestimate static topics. A steady weekly revision of static general knowledge combined with a rolling six month current affairs revision gives the best returns.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Salary

Post Pay Level Initial Basic Pay
Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor Level 6 Rs. 35,400
Goods Train Manager Level 5 Rs. 29,200
Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist Level 5 Rs. 29,200
Senior Clerk cum Typist Level 5 Rs. 29,200

Basic pay is only part of the picture. Railway employees receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance and other applicable allowances, along with benefits such as medical facilities, railway passes and privilege ticket orders, and pension under the applicable scheme. The final take home depends on your posting city, since HRA is linked to city classification, so treat any quoted in-hand figure as approximate and refer to the notification for official details.

Job Profile: What Each Post Involves

Goods Train Manager: Responsible for the safe and efficient movement of goods trains, coordinating with station staff and control, and maintaining records related to the train journey. The role involves operational responsibility and shift work.

Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor: Works in the commercial department, supervising ticketing staff and passenger facilities, handling revenue related work and coordinating commercial activities at stations. This is the only Level 6 post in this notification.

Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist: Handles accounts related work in railway offices, including maintaining records, processing bills and supporting financial documentation, along with typing duties.

Senior Clerk cum Typist: Performs clerical and office work such as correspondence, record keeping and data entry in railway offices, with typing proficiency required.

When you fill in your post preferences, think about the work profile and not just the pay level. Operational roles involve rotational duties, while accounts and clerical posts are typically office based.

RRB NTPC Graduate 2026 Preparation Strategy

You have roughly six to seven weeks between the application deadline and the tentative CBT 1 date. Here is a practical way to use that time.

Week 1 to 2: Build the Base

Start by reading the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly, then take one full-length CBT 1 mock to find your starting point. Do not worry about the score. Use it to see which of the three sections costs you the most time and marks. In Mathematics, revise percentages, ratio, time and work, time and distance, and profit and loss first, since these topics generate the most questions. In Reasoning, practise series, coding and decoding, syllogism and analogies. In General Awareness, begin a daily current affairs habit and revise one static subject every few days.

Week 3 to 4: Practise by Topic and by Section

Move to topic-wise and sectional tests. Aim for accuracy first and then speed. Maintain an error notebook where you write down every question you got wrong and the reason, whether it was a concept gap, a calculation slip or a time issue. Review this notebook every weekend. Begin solving previous year NTPC papers to understand how questions are framed and how difficulty is distributed.

Week 5 to 6: Full-Length Mocks and Revision

Take at least three to four full-length mocks per week under strict time limits. Because CBT 2 is the real merit stage, attempt a few CBT 2 pattern mocks as well, with 120 questions in 90 minutes. After each mock, spend at least as much time analysing as you spent attempting. Revise formulas, important dates, schemes and current affairs notes in short sessions.

Final Week: Consolidate

Avoid learning new topics. Revise your error notebook, formula sheet and current affairs summary. Take one or two mocks at the same time of day as your exam shift, and make sure you know your exam city and reporting requirements.

Handling Negative Marking

With one third negative marking, a wrong answer costs more than most candidates realise. A practical rule is to attempt a question only when you can eliminate at least two options or you are reasonably sure of the answer. Skipping a doubtful question is often the better decision than guessing, especially in Mathematics and Reasoning where you can come back at the end if time permits.

Time Management Inside the Exam

Start with the section where you are strongest to build confidence and bank marks early. A common order that works well is Reasoning first, then General Awareness, then Mathematics, but find what suits you through mocks. Do not spend more than one minute on any single question in CBT 1. Mark it, move on, and return if time remains.

How to Choose Your RRB and Post Preferences

Many candidates spend hours on study plans but only minutes on the single decision that shapes their posting and their competition. Since you can apply to only one RRB, treat this choice as part of your strategy.

Look at vacancies against your category. A board with a large vacancy count in your category, such as Bilaspur, Ranchi or Bengaluru, may offer better odds than a small board where only a handful of seats exist for your category. For instance, RRB Patna has only 29 vacancies in total and none for OBC-NCL or EWS, while RRB Malda has just 26. Always check the category-wise table in the notification before you decide.

Think about the posting zone. Your RRB decides which railway zone you will most likely serve in. If language, family or location matters to you, weigh that against the vacancy numbers. A candidate from Andhra Pradesh or Telangana who is comfortable with Kannada, Tamil or Odia may find boards like Bengaluru, Chennai or Bhubaneswar viable options.

Understand how Goods Train Manager dominates. Several boards, including Bilaspur, Ranchi, Siliguri and Bengaluru, have most of their vacancies in the Goods Train Manager post. If you prefer an office based role, such as Junior Accounts Assistant or Senior Clerk, check which boards actually have vacancies for those posts, since some have none at all.

Be honest about your skills. If you apply for the clerical posts, you must have typing proficiency in English or Hindi. If your typing is weak, build that skill in parallel instead of assuming the skill test has vanished completely from the process.

Avoid chasing rumours about cutoffs. Cutoffs depend on the number of applicants, the difficulty of the paper and normalisation across shifts. Choose the board that fits your life and prepare to score as high as you can.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Waiting for the exam date. The exam is only weeks away. Candidates who start after the admit card arrives rarely catch up.

Ignoring General Awareness. It carries a large share of marks, and it is the most improvable section in a short period.

Choosing an RRB without research. Your choice of RRB affects competition, posting and language comfort. Compare vacancy numbers and your own preferences before you submit.

Mismatch in Aadhaar and Class 10 details. Verify name and date of birth before you start the application, and fix any mismatch early.

Last minute applications. Heavy traffic near the closing date can cause payment failures and portal delays. Apply well before 6 November 2026.

Skipping mocks. Concept knowledge alone does not clear NTPC. Speed and accuracy under time pressure are built only through regular mock tests and analysis.

Treating CBT 1 as unimportant. Although CBT 1 is a screening stage, you must clear it with a comfortable margin to reach CBT 2, where merit is decided.
